چکیده
Observational data regarding the properties of cirrus clouds are needed to aid in the development of accurate, physically based parameterizations in climate models. The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, is providing continuous observations of cirrus clouds with a suite of instrumentation at several ocales. In this paper, we describe an algorithm to derive the microphysical properties of optically thin cirrus clouds. This algorithm uses radar reflectivity and infrared emission spectra from an interferometer and is tailored for the specific instruments at the ARM sites. We present in situ validation of the technique and examine a cirrus case study to illustrate the sensitivity of the algorithm. In the case study, solar fluxes calculated from the retrieved microphysical parameters are compared to observed fluxes to build confidence in the algorithm results. Comparison of the retrieved quantities to microphysical parameters retrieved from satellite data is also presented.

Retrieval of Cirrus Microphysical Properties with a Suite of Algorithms for Airborne and Spaceborne Lidar, Radar, and Radiometer Data
Algorithms are developed to convert data streams from multiple airborne and spaceborne remote sensors into layer-averaged cirrus bulk microphysical properties. Radiometers such as the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) observe narrowband spectral radiances, and active remote sensors such as the lidar on the Cloud–Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CA...

[1] We developed an efficient thermal infrared radiative transfer model on the basis of the delta-four-stream approximation to facilitate high-spectral-resolution remote sensing applications under cirrus cloudy conditions in the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) data. Numerical experiments demonstrated that sensitivity in the 800-1130 cm 1 thermal infrared window spectral region is sufficient...
متن کاملCirrus Cloud Properties Derived from the First Year of Millimeter Wave Cloud Radar Data
The representation of cirrus clouds in large-scale models continues to be a problem of considerable contemporary importance. These cloud systems occur over vast areas of the earth’s surface, tend to occur in all climatic regimes and demonstrate a high degree of variability in their macro and microphysical properties (Liou 1986). Furthermore, cirrus can significantly influence the overall heatin...

CloudSat and CALIPSO (Stephens et al., 2002) will fly in formation with Aqua and the footprints of the three spacecraft will overlap each other within several minutes. Observational data from the A-Train satellite constellation will provide a unique opportunity to derive a global description of the occurrence and properties of cirrus clouds. CloudSat will fly the first spaceborne millimeter wav...
متن کاملOn retrieving the microphysical properties of cirrus clouds using the moments of the millimeterwavelength Doppler spectrum
[1] Techniques that use only measurements provided by millimeter-wavelength Doppler radar for retrieving the properties of clouds provide certain practical advantages over techniques that require measurements from multiple instruments. We concentrate on the capacity of the moments of the Doppler spectrum to provide information suitable for retrieving the microphysical properties of cirrus cloud...
